PC Alex Chambers is a good man, known and trusted across Kingston Upon Thames, where his steady presence has woven him into the community’s daily rhythm. He understands, as all officers do, that people and places rarely reveal their true nature at first glance.
On his patch stands an unassuming venue, ordinary by day, concealing a secret buried deep and long denied. One chance encounter, beneath a storm-lashed sky and icy rain, cracks that secret wide open. What emerges is not resolution or relief, but something far more dangerous, dragging Alex toward consequences that will haunt the borough forever.

IMAGINATION EXPLOSION! *****
Where do I start? This book is an absolute page-turner and you feel immersed within the story from the get-go. I love psychological thrillers and this is up there with one of my favourite authors, Richard Montanari. What you need to understand though, this is Dave Haywoods first book! The main characters are entwined without question, but you’ll see that as the storyline unravels. I lived every moment with PC Chambers and cannot wait for the author to write his next book. Big shoes to fill, but I have no doubt it will be as brilliant as ‘What We Leave Behind’.
GREAT TWISTS ALL THROUGH *****
Great first book from this new author. Lots of twists and turns and surprises throughout and a real shock at the end. Don't want to spoil it for others but can't wait for the next one to be released. Highly recommended.
AMAZING DEBUT BOOK *****
I have just finished reading this un put down able book. I came across this author via his day job, which he does with humour and seriousness in equal measure. When I heard he was going to publish a serious crime book I had my doubts as he has a very amusing way with words and I thought maybe serious wouldn’t work. How wrong could I be? Very is the answer. His description of the characters paints them clearly in your mind, their thoughts feelings and moods. His description of dementia is well researched. The black sense of humour used by all emergency services is there and may be frowned upon by readers who have never had to do the jobs they do or put up with the stick they get from the media and certain elements of the public. I could relate to it all and had a good few laugh-out-loud moments. His knowledge of police procedures, the things they deal with and how they deal with the emotional side of the job was well described. The first few chapters had me wondering how this was all going to tie in and make one story, I need not have worried, the author weaved it all together perfectly. If you like a good psychological thriller, with a twist of supernatural horror… this is for you.
WOW!! A GREAT READ!! *****
I follow Dave Haywood online and have been waiting with great anticipation for 'What We Leave Behind' to be published. WOW!! The hype certainly did not disappoint. It is a unique concept, unlike anything I have ever read before. So well written and in particular, the attention that has been paid to the back story. This brings the characters to life and pulls the whole tale together making it a mesmerizing read.
The story is like no other. You expect this is going to be a regular crime thriller, but don’t be fooled! It takes you on a journey that is so unpredictable, you will want to read it all over again. I know I do! No spoilers, you have to find out for yourselves!
A fantastic and fresh writing style and approach. I couldn’t put it down once I started. I don’t think any other novel has provoked such a reaction from me before – it made me smile and scream in equal measure. I even felt compassion for the villain at times! This is testament to the talent of this new author and I wish him every success. Here’s hoping he has more to unleash, we need more like this on our bookshelves!
COMPELLING! THIS IS A PAGE TURNER!! *****
The author cleverly weaves together many characters and storylines with just enough information to help you feel like you are on a journey with him... but plenty of mystery to make you go "aaaaah" when all is revealed.
I also loved the references and insight into life in the met police - insight that could never be gained just from research, but clearly someone who has "walked the walked" for a number of years.
Just enough hints of humour, with a hint of compassion for all, to keep you from being swirled too much into the dark underbelly of society. A page-turner for sure, which I don't hesitate to recommend.
I'm ready for the sequel now.
GRIPPING READ... CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE *****
What We Leave Behind is a brilliant read that will keep you hooked from the very first page. How the author writes each chapter, switching between different characters and recollections is something I’ve really enjoyed. It is written so well that it flows perfectly.
Dave Haywood's writing will make you laugh, be shocked, sympathise and internally scream. Within this crime thriller, there is a rollercoaster of emotions. PC Alex Chambers is a very relatable character and takes you through these emotions as if you were there yourself.
From someone who has read this book multiple times, I 100% recommend it. I found myself unable to put it down. On further read-throughs, I noticed more details that I had missed the first time around.
WHAT THE HECK!? THIS IS BRILLIANT *****
The amount of times I would audibly say "WTF!" throughout this book is unreal.
What a phenomenal spin on what one would generally expect to be a decent crime thriller. It's so so much more than that. Now, hear me out. You will not expect what's coming. You'll progress feeling safe, thinking "I know what's going to happen next hehe" then BAM! What the heck!??
You'll chuckle, you'll gasp, you might even shed a tear. I seriously recommend this absolutely fantastic debut novel from Mr Haywood. I really really hope the next one is out soon. I'm already itching for it!
AMAZING! *****
This book was an emotional rollercoaster. You will laugh, be shocked and cry out "what the-?!?" Over and over. The story pulls you in and keep a firm grip on you until you finish this brilliant page turner. I would recommend.
