The author has a real talent for creating detailed imagery with her words and the well researched historical references add an extra dimension to the story. Really looking forward to the next one.

Very interesting plot with easy to imagine characters. The level of detail in the descriptions made every aspect of the story also easy to visualise as I read which made the book all the more enjoyable.

Rachel Wade has a knack of taking a moment in time and holding it in a way that these days might almost be called mindfulness. This can show a character coughing out a fragment of a meal of ‘hare and turnips’, or the dubious hygiene habits of a pub landlord, or even a knife being driven into a human neck. Her descriptions are ‘hyper’. Mrs Holden’s husband Matthew isn’t just a big man, he’s, “a brusque block of a man with an uncanny resemblance to a bull.” To use a twenty first century colloquialism its Dickens on steroids.
