In the heart of Victorian York, there is a shop like no other.
Mrs Holden may be widowed, childless and infirm, but her unexpected venture quickly becomes the talk of the town. With the help of Tobias Michael, his daughter Irene, and a beady-eyed crow, Mrs Holden slowly begins to rebuild her life after decades of heartbreak and solitude – until the unimaginable happens.
Mr Michael discovers the shop to be completely empty. Frightened and alone, Mrs Holden has nothing but the clothes on her back, her battered armchair, and a mysterious letter opener. Mr Michael vows to find the thief, but the criminal is one step ahead. Mrs Holden is found dead, the letter opener missing, and no witnesses to the crime. Vowing vengeance, Mr Michael goes in search of the culprit and comes across an identical shop with a strangely familiar face at its helm…

Very interesting plot with easy to imagine characters. The level of detail in the descriptions made every aspect of the story also easy to visualise as I read which made the book all the more enjoyable.
